My doctorate journey: lessons in resilience

9 September 2025 ยท Ir. Ts. Dr. Bibi Sabrena Sakandar Khan

I was in hibernation mode for the last few days. The reason: finishing Chapters 4 and 5 of my doctorate thesis.

This is something on my personal growth checklist, for me, myself and I. I am taking my own sweet time, after a series of withdrawals, because I value my sanity and my work first!

DBA, first round: I withdrew from UiTM AAGBS. DBA, second round: I registered straight away with UNITAR during COVID, because this is my ultimate academic goal.

What I really want to share is what this whole journey taught me.

  1. It is not a competition. If you fail the first time, you are not a failure! Do not give in to peer pressure, or whatever else may come.
  2. Think creatively. Be real. Keep several plans in mind ("what if, what if"), because you will need plan B or C when things come up. No worries if you get stuck: widen your resources and gather as much information as you can.
  3. Resilience is a must. Get up, do something differently, or look at your surroundings and assess the situation. Be extra ready, or find the courage to continue. Stay humble while you gather all the input.
  4. Protect your sanity. You are on a journey, and every step and every stone has an implication. If you are stressed or overwhelmed, take a break, or talk to your cats, your family, a tree or the sea, whatever suits you.
  5. Allah is the Almighty. In the end, pray to Him.

Enjoy the journey.
